How Counterfeiting Works

by Nathan Zachary

It’s easy to see why counterfeiting is appealing. If you could print your own money without getting caught, you could use it to buy anything you want. Counterfeiting is the most advanced way for people to get something for free.

In the not-too-distant past, it was hard and expensive to make fake money. It needed big printing presses and the skill to cut complicated designs into metal plates by hand. Today, it is a lot easier to make fake bills and that is why people buy counterfeit money online. Teenagers learn every year that if they are willing to break the law, they can make fake money in about 10 minutes with a computer, a scanner, and a colour printer.

Printing Cash

Attempting to print your scanned twenty dollars reveals the issue. Even if the scanner can capture fine detail, that doesn’t ensure your printer is. Getting a higher quality printer may help with these issues. It will take several rounds of test printing and adjusting the colour to get the general tone right before you can use your scan to make a real bill. With enough work and a decent printer, you can create a bill that, although not flawless, is presentable to the naked sight. You can make a bill that, while not perfect, is nonetheless acceptable if you put in the time and use a good printer. However, the fake currency will be instantly exposed upon physical contact. The paper is to blame for that.

The Importance of Paper

The feeling of wealth is familiar to most people. Those who work with money on a regular basis, such as bank tellers, cashiers, and wait staff, are trained to recognise a fake bill at first touch.

There are at least three characteristics of paper money that contribute to its distinctive “feel of money”:

Everyday paper products including copy paper, notepad sheets, book pages, and newspaper are manufactured using cellulose extracted from trees. Money paper, on the other hand, is manufactured from natural fibres like cotton and linen. Rag paper is the common name for this material. Rag paper is preferable since it will remain intact even if paper currency is accidently washed in a washing machine. Making fake bills on “regular” computer paper is the last thing a forger wants to do. It won’t write right, and any fake may be spotted with a simple pen. Therefore, some forgers will go to great lengths to obtain high-quality paper. In a perfect world, counterfeiters would utilize official government paper to print fake bills. However, it’s difficult to get your hands on this material. There is no commercial distribution of this product.

Counterfeit Crime and Punishment

It’s important to note that counterfeiting is not a small crime. It’s not the same as skipping a stoplight or stealing from a store. As misdemeanors, these offences are dealt with by state and city authorities on a more regional basis.

Because of the central role that money plays in our culture, counterfeiting is considered a serious offence. Money is the lifeblood of a business or economy. It becomes much more difficult to buy products if individuals do not have faith that the money, they carry is real, which in turn slows down the economy.
