How to Fix an Overheating Laptop

A brand-new laptop works smoothly and delivers the best performance until we clutter it up with a lot of apps. When we overload the laptop, the performance may dip down and you may face overheating issues. There can be several reasons behind an overheating laptop. It can be due to a hardware issue or a software conflict. Mostly it is due to utilizing maximum system resources or fan issues with the laptop. You can try these steps to fix laptop overheating issues on Windows.

Clean Airflow Vents

The first and foremost step to resolve this issue is to clean the Airflow vents. You can find this vent on the left-hand side panel of the laptop keypad. Ensure to clear the vent from outside with a light brush when the laptop is turned ON. Since it will be blowing out when it’s turned ON, the dust will not go in deeper and will come out.

Use an Original Charger

Using a local charger can also cause heating issues on the laptop. A generic charger may not supply adequate power to the laptop. A little bit higher voltage can crash the battery algorithm and may result in overheating laptops. The charger should be genuine and according to the model number of the laptop.

Use a Laptop Cooling Pad

A laptop cooling pad is a useful gadget as it can keep the bottom cool and avoid heating issues. There are plenty of options available online for cooling pads that come with a USB charger and keep the airflow proper with modern lights to jazz up the looks.

Reduce Startup Apps

Whenever you install any app, it gets added to the startup items list. When you boot your computer, it loads all those apps on the computer. This consumes a lot of system resources and results in performance / overheating issues. You can follow these steps to reduce the startup items.

Step 1. Right-click on the Task Bar and select Task Manager. You can also right-click on the Start button and select Task Manager.

Step 2. Click on the Startup tab on the Task Manager window to list out all the apps in your Startup.

Step 3. Click on the Status column to sort apps by status as Enabled.

Step 4. List out apps that you don’t want to load when you boot the laptop. Click on the app and click on the Disable button at the bottom. Do this with all the unwanted apps that you wish to disable. Restart the laptop to apply settings and check if those apps loaded by default or are disabled now.

Alternatively!

Step 1. Click on the Start button, type Startup, and click on the Startup Apps option from the search results.

Step 2. The Startup Apps window will open and list out all the Enabled and Disabled apps.

Step 3. Sort Apps by Status and toggle off to disable the Apps you don’t want to load. This will disable the apps to load by default when you boot to the Windows desktop.

Use At a Cool Place

Using a cool room temperature can also reduce the level of overheating issues on a laptop. If you are using a laptop at a hot room temperature, the device will automatically overheat without any software or hardware issues. Don’t use the laptop for a long time on your lap as it will also heat up with your body temperature along with the hardware heat.

Update BIOS Settings

BIOS plays a big role in your hardware management. If your CPU fan speed is not as per the hardware usage, it may result in overheating issues. Updating BIOS may offer laptop overheating solutions. You can update BIOS settings to reduce CPU Fan Speed, Chasis Fan Speed, CPU temperature, and voltage consumption.

Step 1. Restart your laptop and continuously keep on tapping the Delete / F2 / F10 or F12 keys. Different laptop models trigger BIOD with different keys.

Step 2. Go to Hardware Monitor using the arrow keys and press enter.

Step 3. Navigate to the CPU Fan and press Enter. Select it as Auto to automatically manage the speed, if it doesn’t work, set it to Maximum to get the maximum speed and cooling when needed. Press F10 to save the settings and exit.
