Minecraft Dungeons supports both local co-op and internet multiplayer, and this guide contains all of the information that players need to play with their friends.

After a minor delay, the release date of Minecraft Dungeon has finally arrived, and players are now immersed in this new dungeon crawler from Mojang Studios and Double Eleven. While some fans will prefer to explore Minecraft Dungeons alone, others will want to bring a companion or two, and the game does support co-op for up to four players. This article is meant to help those fans who are having difficulty obtaining this multiplayer setup.

Before we get into how to play Minecraft Dungeons with friends, it’s worth noting that the game does not support cross-platform play at launch. While a future update will enable cross-platform play, for the time being, users will only be able to enjoy Minecraft Dungeons with pals on the same platform. With that established, here’s how it’s done:

  1. Minecraft Dungeons: How to Play Online Multiplayer

The first step in playing online multiplayer in Minecraft Dungeons is to finish the tutorial, and reaching the first camp with Mission Select indicates that this has been accomplished. Players can then choose to join a friend’s online session or start their own, with both choices available from character choose or during ordinary gaming.

On the character pick screen, choose “Online Game,” then either “Start Online Game” and invite a buddy or join a current session under “Game Sessions.” During ordinary play, the method is relatively identical, and fans merely need to pull up the menu to view the “Start Online Game” and “Game Sessions” options.

When you pick “Online Game,” a window will appear displaying which friends are online and whether there are any active game sessions for you to join. If none of your friends are holding sessions, you can start your own. Simply choose the friend you want to invite and invite them to your game. (When you pick a buddy on Xbox One, the Xbox One interface will appear on top of the game, allowing you to invite them to participate.)

Make sure you pick Online Game in the bottom left corner when you initially launch Minecraft Dungeons. This will bring up a menu where you can either host your own game or join a friend’s game. You are not permitted to join a stranger’s game or to host one for random participants. So if you want to just go into other users’ instances, you’re out of luck. If you’re purchasing Minecraft Dungeons primarily for the multiplayer, make sure you have a few friends who are also purchasing it.

  1. Minecraft Dungeons: How to Play Local Co-Op

Couch co-op in Minecraft Dungeons is simple, requiring only the connection of additional controllers. It should be noted that PC gamers who want to set up local co-op must have multiple controllers, as one fan cannot use a controller while another uses a mouse and keyboard.

Once you’re in a game, you can invite friends to join you. Open the friends menu when you’re at Camp, in particular (on Xbox One, this is done by pressing the View button — the button with the two rectangles on it). You may then discover which friends are online and invite them to participate!

Return to the main menu and click Online Game | Change above the Online Game tab if you prefer to play with others in person. Before loading your environment, highlight and select Offline Game. Open your friends list while in your camp to connect with the other players. All that remains is for the other players to create their Minecraft Dungeons characters, and they will load into the game.
