How to Start a Blog: Easy Beginner’s Guide
  • Pick you niche and domain

First, you need to give your new blog a name and a focus.

Your blog’s name, like yourblog.com, is the first thing readers will see. It should be either a general description of what you’ll be writing about or your own name, the name of your business, a clever play on words, or something else.

The niche of your blog is the general topic area that you’ll be writing about. Travel, food, fashion, lifestyle, technology, and other things are some examples of blog topics. Putting a word or two in the name of your blog that shows what it’s about (like fashionbyjane.com or hikewithryan.com) will be very helpful for people who want to read it.

  • Take your website hosting

Getting your blog online is the second step in starting a blog. That is what a company that hosts websites will do for you. In this step, you’ll choose the blogging platform and web hosting plan you’ll use to get your blog online.

Bluehost hosts my WordPress blog, which is also what most other bloggers use. WordPress is a free publishing platform that has been around since 2003 and now powers more than 60% of all blogs on the Internet. Bluehost is one of the most well-known and trustworthy blog hosting companies. We’ll use this mix to get your blog up and running. Let’s set up your hosting now.

  • Design your blog with free tools of wordpress

Now that we’ve finished the important part of setting up a blog, we can have a little more fun.

If you’ve never worked on a blog before, you might feel a little stuck when you’re designing your WordPress blog, but I promise this won’t get too technical.

Plus, I don’t want the small technical details of setting up a blog to stop you from making progress today. So, in my free course, “How to Build a Blog in 7 Days,” I break down the technical setup process into a step-by-step checklist to make it easier for you to follow.

  • Write your first blog post

You don’t read a blog just because it looks good or because it’s updated often. (Even though both of those help.)

You read a blog because what it says interests you. Making good content is what will bring you readers and help you make money from blogging in the long run.

Before you make a business plan for your blog, map out your content roadmap, or write your first blog post, you need to answer one simple question: Why?

Why do you care about the subject of your blog?

Why should people care about what you have to say?

Why is this a good topic for you to blog about?

In order to answer these questions, I like to think of a blog as a business and stress again how important it is to pick a clear niche.

  • Promote your blog and get readers

As 2023 approaches, we can look back and see that my blog had more than 4.4 million readers in just one year. We’re going to use what I learned when I started a blog and quickly got millions of people to read it. What should you do after you publish your first blog post? It’s time to learn how to get people to read your blog.

Companies like LinkedIn, Zendesk, Adobe, Close, Intuit, and more hire me as a consultant to write content for their blogs, teach them how to promote their content, and bring in new readers.

  • Start Earning

There’s a reason why this guide to starting a blog ends with how to make money from your blog. You can’t expect to make money right away unless you already have a big audience somewhere. Making money shouldn’t be your number one goal right now, but rather something to work towards.

Still, it’s good to have an idea of how you’d like to make money blogging before you start, especially if passive income is important to you. Some of these ways to make money will be easier to use while your readership is still growing than others.
