Resume: The Foundation of First Impressions

As applicants, one vital aspect they must look into is the resume. A resume summarizes an individual’s past experiences that may be relevant to the document’s content. Presenting a personal resume will serve as the employer’s guide in assessing an applicant’s potential. The person reading this document may determine if the position’s competencies align with the candidate’s experiences and goals.

Just like a roadmap, a resume is an applicant’s guide towards the job they are applying for. A basic resume template must include content that indicates one’s capabilities to prove that the candidate is qualified for the job. This is what the employer uses to form their first impression of the job-seeker when they look at their potential workers. 

Several ways may serve as a guide for potential employees in generating a compelling resume. However, before writing this, one must ensure what type of resume they must use that will fit the company’s standard. Furthermore, here are some basic yet valuable resumes that an applicant may utilize to ensure an impressive first impression. 

  1. Functional resume
  • This type of resume works best if an applicant’s work experience is not robust enough, in their opinion, to impress the employer. Functional resumes focus more on a person’s skills and potential as an individual. It does not consider the occupation they have undertaken in the past. This will help them highlight their capabilities that may be a strong suit for the company’s vacant position if we base it on its job description. With this, it is essential to know that indicating practical situations wherein these skills will be used is a crucial part of this resume.
  1. Chronological resume
  • This is one of the most common ways of writing a resume. Unlike the functional resume, the chronological resume is primarily influenced by time and order of arrangement for each situation or work experience. It will help the employer differentiate the timeline of an applicant’s work history. Preferably, it must start with the applicant’s most recent career, followed by their past work experiences for the previous years before that. In addition, it is essential to remember that these mentioned jobs must be relevant to the position they are applying for. 
  1. Combination resume
  • A combination resume, on the other hand, requires a composite blend of both functional and chronological types of resumes. In this, we suggest that applicants drop their significant work-related experiences for the past ten years relevant to the position and their profound skills and qualifications that they find advantageous for the job they seek. Most of these resumes start with the chronological content, succeeded by the functional-related context.
  1. Targeted resume
  • Regardless of the type of resume an applicant eyes to use, whether chronological, functional or combination, a targeted resume works well with accentuating the objectives of the description in the applicant’s resume based on the job they are applying for. This includes mastering and being familiar with the company’s vision, mission, and goal by mirroring them to the statements they will mention in the resume.

Similar to how business works, applicants try to market themselves by accentuating their background, skills, and experience through the document they provide. An employer can figure out if a job applicant is likely to help the company’s reputation and do a good job on the job. A resume must be short and precise. It does not need to contain lengthy paragraphs with irrelevant information. The first step to getting an employer’s attention with a resume is to write content that is relevant to the job.
