Faced with the return of Adrien Quatennens, they table a bill. The Renaissance deputies want to create a sentence “of ineligibility for those who have been convicted of acts of domestic violence or intra-family violence”, declared their president, Aurore Bergé, on Wednesday January 11.
The filing of this bill is the “political response” of the parliamentary group “to the return of Adrien Quatennens to the National Assembly”, she added, after the elected official sat in committee in the morning. Nearly a month after his 4-month suspended prison sentence for having slapped his wife, the deputy from the North now sits among the non-registered, due to his temporary exclusion from the group La France insoumise.
A proposal debated in March
“This device will be for those who have been convicted, even when the acts of violence have not resulted in ITT [total incapacity for work]”, specified the deputy of Yvelines. “We consider that one can no longer remain a parliamentarian with dignity and represent all French people when one has been convicted of acts of violence,” she said.
The bill should be debated in the next niche of the Renaissance group, “early March”, said Aurore Bergé. “We hope that it will be able to collect the votes of unanimity minus one vote, probably, of our Assembly”, she added, alluding to Adrien Quatennens.
A return on the sly. Adrien Quatennens returned to the National Assembly on Wednesday January 11 for the first time in several months. The MP from the North, who attended a meeting of the Foreign Affairs Committee on the reform of the diplomatic corps, presented himself as a non-attached MP. “I do my job as a parliamentarian. I respect and apply the decision taken by my political group,” replied the elected official to journalists, assuring that he did not wish to make a statement.

Since his four-month suspended prison sentence for violence against his wife, the rebellious elected official has been excluded from the activities of the LFI group, a group that he will only be able to rejoin next April. His return to the rebellious ranks is conditional on a course of accountability on violence against women. “I will respect the collective decision of the group”, declared the deputy, intending however to “honor” his mandate.
A divisive return
“He made the choice not to resign. He could have made the choice to resign and represent himself before his voters to maintain legitimacy. It is not the choice he made, it belongs to him”, commented Olivier Véran, the government spokesperson, questioned about the return of Adrien Quatennens at the end of the Council of Ministers.
The question of the return of the deputy had divided the partners of La France insoumise within Nupes. The leader of the environmental deputies, Cyrielle Châtelain, had thus demanded his resignation. On the side of the militants, more than a thousand members of La France insoumise and Nupes had signed a platform in Le Monde in December to denounce the decision of the movement to exclude Adrien Quatennens only temporarily.
