Varnishing: Advantages And Disadvantages

by Nathan Zachary

The vast majority of our customers choose to have their floors varnished. Varnish is a durable type of treatment and is extremely easy to clean. When you spill liquids on your lacquered wooden floor, the liquid will basically settle on top of the lacquer. This is a clear advantage over oil-treated wooden floors, where you may well risk that liquid penetrates into the wood with any marks as a result.

Our standard varnish consists of a water-based varnish, which is applied three times after finishing sanding the floor. If you want a more durable floor, we would recommend one of our 2-component varnishes. Here the wear resistance is better, but the price is also slightly higher than Gulvafslibning and varnishing with ordinary water-based varnish.

Finally, we also have a number of special types of varnish, which, for example, have a very matte appearance. If you have special wishes for how you want your floor to appear, we can therefore most likely help you, even if you want a varnish that “stands out a little from the norm”.

Extend your floor treatment with a net varnish

At Gulvkbh, we always end up giving the floor a final wear layer when varnishing. This helps to ensure good abrasion resistance, and you get the opportunity to give the floor a net polish and a new layer of topcoat. This allows you to avoid sanding the floor down, provided that there are only light surface scratches in the floor. This, of course, lowers our time consumption, which makes such a treatment cheaper compared to floor sanding and regular multi-layer varnishing.

Oil treatment: Advantages and disadvantages

Oil treatment is not quite as durable as varnishing and is also more maintenance-intensive. The price of oil treatment is generally also higher in oil treatment, compared to varnishing. This is partly due to the fact that oil treatment of wooden floors requires that the floor is sanded extra fine. Otherwise you will be able to see sanding marks in the wooden floor, as the oil does not straighten the surface in the same way as is the case with varnish.

The advantages of oiling wooden floors, however, are that the oiling can give the wood a really nice glow. This can highlight the veins of the tree and help to give the tree more play. Here you also have the opportunity to make use of dyeing oils, which can either give the wood a lighter or darker look or even make the wood look like driftwood.

As your oil-treated wooden floor wears out, it may eventually be possible to re-oil all or part of the floor. This means that you can expect an oiled floor to be more maintenance intensive than a lacquered floor.

Gulvkbh treatment of wooden floors

As an alternative to oil treatment and varnishing, Gulvkbh treatment can also be mentioned. With a Gulvkbh treatment, the natural yellowing process of the wooden floor is stopped, in addition to the Gulvkbh treatment protecting the floor itself. If you choose to have your floor Gulvkbh-treated, we generally recommend that you wash your floor in a strong soap solution 10-15 times. This may sound very cumbersome at first, but we promise you will be happy with it in the long run. By saturating the floor with soapy water before it begins to be exposed to dirt and grime, you can form a protective layer, which makes the floor much easier to clean.
