Catholic nuns support priests in pilgrimage to Lahore
The Catholic nuns of Lahore supported the priests and bishops of the Archdiocese of Lahore in organizing a pilgrimage to Mariamabad in September. This year, more than 100 nuns from 25 congregations took part in the pilgrimage, which was titled “Holy Mary, Source of Love.” The pilgrimage to Mariamabad annually draws more than half a million people.
The Archdiocese of Lahore has 26 parishes, including St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, one of the oldest mission stations in the city. Founded in 1953 by Capuchin Franciscan missionaries from Belgium, this church draws people from both urban and rural communities. The Archdiocese of Lahore is also home to the National Marian Shrine in Mariamabad, which attracts devotees of all faiths. The shrine has become a center for interreligious dialogue, and the prayers of the faithful at the shrine are credited with many miracles.
The Archdiocese of Lahore recently announced that the annual pilgrimage to Mariamabad will proceed as planned, under strict safety guidelines. The pilgrims must follow standard operating procedures and undergo mandatory vaccinations. It is expected that about 1.2 million people will visit the shrine this year. Last year, the Punjab government ordered the Lahore Archdiocese to cancel all planned pilgrimages, but they were allowed to continue with their plans this year.
A group of Catholic nuns also accompanied the priests during the pilgrimage to Lahore. One of them, Akash, was killed during the explosion at St. John’s Catholic Church. His death placed him on the path to canonization. The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan Jamaat-ul-Ahrar claimed responsibility for the blasts.
