ART Garge in Dubai

ART Garge in Dubai

When you think of art and architecture, you probably don’t picture a sprawling warehouse on the edge of a city. But the ART garage Dubai is far from a barren concrete block. A Pritzker Prize-winning architect designed it, and the UAE is home to its first OMA-designed building. The gallery features the work of Syrian artists, whose work has played a key role in the history of the region, yet has remained underappreciated on the global stage. You can see the works in the gallery through April 3, 2017.

Alserkal Avenue

Located in the Al Quoz district of art garge Dubai, Alserkal Avenue is an industrial area that has turned into a creative hub. It houses global and local artists who live in residency in this urban space. The area is home to many exhibitions and activities for the public to enjoy.

Several art shows are currently on view in the Alserkal Avenue district, all showcasing the intersection of digital and physical art. The cultural hub is one of the most vibrant art districts in the UAE. Visitors can take advantage of free admission and public transportation to get to the site.

The complex was founded by Emirati entrepreneur Abdelmonem bin Eisa Alserkal in 2007. Initially, it consisted of local commercial galleries but has since evolved into an upscale cultural hub with more than 60 spaces for creative-sector tenants. It recently welcomed Leila Heller’s 14,000-square-foot galleries and the Jean-Paul Najar Foundation.

In addition to the exhibitions, art garge in Dubai also hosts a number of workshops, film screenings, and live interactive performances. The most recent exhibition, More Than Human, explores the relationship between human and non-human materials. Curated by Fatema Al Fardan, the show features work by interdisciplinary artist Zuhoor Al Sayegh and Lubnah Ansari. The exhibition is part of Alserkal Arts Week, which aims to spark creative minds throughout the region.

While the Alserkal Avenue district has some established galleries, it also boasts a number of emerging ones that are worth checking out. For instance, the Chi-Ka Gallery on Alserkal Avenue features Far Eastern-inspired designs. The Custot Gallery Dubai hosts a scale model of Alserkal Avenue, and the B4 Space is a co-working space with free wi-fi, coffee, and pop-up shops. The British designer Deborah Henning is also represented in this area.

Pritzker Prize winner’s repurposing of arts-related buildings

The UAE is redefining art and architecture through the repurposing of the arts-related building stock, including the iconic Dubai Opera House. Award-winning architects Jean-Philippe Vassal and Anne Lacaton have won a Pritzker Prize for their creative use of existing structures. They have refurbished and expanded existing buildings and their vision has transformed the lives of thousands of people.
