IT and e-governance are essential to Smart Cities’ overall urban development. It is a crucial component that serves as a catalyst for the development of high-tech communities across the nation. The provision of government services benefits from the newest technology’s improved connectedness, productivity, and accessibility.
ICT (Information & Communication Technology)-based electronic governance (e-governance) applications provide services to residents, staff, and the broader government structure. Another tool for data storage, retrieval, transmission, and manipulation is information technology. These two programmes working together is the main engine powering Smart Cities around the country.
One crucial element that connects individuals and the government to create an efficient smart city is social media. Under the Smart Cities Mission, the federal and state governments are concentrating on introducing various technology-based programmes and devices. Tech-friendly cities are being developed through projects utilising app-based solutions, PPPs, and other IT-related initiatives.
IT and e-government are currently making contributions to each segment of the construction of 90 Smart Cities:
–
Debris Management
Cities are greatly impacted by the efficient disposal of waste and conversion into valuable materials.
In order to create “Smart Cities,” the government is taking steps to digitise the waste management system.
The automated system is going to be setup with electronic devices.
Dharamsala, for instance, was the first city to use sensor-based trash cans.
City Mobility
Urban mobility is the term for intelligent transportation in cities.
The government’s priorities in the field of urban transportation include effective public transit systems, Intelligent Transport Systems, Traffic Information and Control, multimodal integration, and capacity building and training.
For 24-hour CCTV surveillance, cameras are being installed in several cities’ public transportation and roadways.
A news source claims that “US would give smart transit solutions for Visakhapatnam, Ajmer, and Allahabad.”
Energy efficiency
The best method, or “Smart Energy,” for creating smart cities that can provide their residents with basic services is to use energy efficiently.
Many cities are implementing this technique of reforming the government agencies.
The departments in charge of energy supply will be totally digitalized. The operations of Punjab State Power Corporation Limited’s customers will also be digitalized.
As part of the urban development employing smart energy, the city of Indore will install LED street lights, while a housing society in Mumbai is going toward solar energy.
Electronic payments, online learning, the provision of educational technology, and other government initiatives in various States are resulting in high literacy rates in smart cities.
Smart Healthcare: Through m-health, e-medicine, and online consultation, residents of many cities will have access to all necessary medical services.
In addition to the Swachh Bharat Mission, AMRUT, infrastructure, agriculture, manufacturing, business, and economics, IT & e-governance are also transforming cities into “Smart Cities.”
With the assistance of industry giants like Microsoft, Cisco, Infosys, IBM, OLA, Uber, Larsen & Tourbo, Snapdeal, and Amazon, among others, the government is collaborating with these companies to implement work transparency, accountability, and access to the database that enables residents to meet their basic needs in their own cities.
Government agencies are empowered by ICT and e-governance to make citizens’ access to policies and services easier. Any government-related task can be accessed by anyone, and improved connection is encouraging fruitful results. One of the best initiatives of e-governance is the linking of Aadhaar cards online to access all government services.
The power of ICT and e-governance is something that Prime Minister Narendra Modi firmly believes in. He mentioned e-governance when speaking at a business summit in Vibrant Gujarat, saying, “I often remark that e-government is easy and effective governance.” This claim shows that the Indian government is prepared to implement the idea of IT and e-governance, which will serve as a firm foundation for smart cities and eventually transform India into a smart country.
