Meet Dr. Kumar: A Local Doctor of Urology

by Nathan Zachary
Dr.-Priyanka-Kumar (1)

Dr. Kumar grew up in Crown Point, IN, and graduated from Merrillville High School before pursuing a degree in Biology, with a minor in business administration from the University of Southern Indiana. After finishing his undergraduate studies, Dr. Kumar attended the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine where he was awarded his Doctorate of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his residency in Urology at Meridian Hospital in Indianapolis, IN. He has been practicing as an attending urologist at Northwestern Hospital in Chicago, IL since 2003 and loves being able to provide patients with top-quality care and the best chance of cure for their urological problems.

So how did you end up being a doctor?

As a child, I always had a passion for learning about the human body. Even when I was studying for other subjects, my primary focus was learning about the anatomy and physiology of the human body. When it came time to decide what profession I wanted to pursue, becoming a doctor seemed like an obvious decision. At first, I wanted to become a cardiologist because that’s all I thought doctors did with their lives – they cared for people’s hearts! But when I got into college and became exposed to other types of doctors in different fields, that realization made me even more interested in becoming a urologist because there are many cool things you can do with your life as one!

What do you enjoy most about your job?

When I am working with a patient, my favorite part is giving them a sense of relief and to make sure they have all the information they need so that they can understand their care best and live their life as normally as possible after their treatment. My goal as a doctor of urology is to make sure that my patients know what’s going on in their treatment and what to expect so they can take control over what’s happening to them. It is gratifying when my patients tell me how appreciative they are for everything I do for them – it makes me feel like I’m doing something good for our community by helping these individuals move forward with their lives with more confidence.

What drives you every day?

My ultimate goal is to improve the quality of life for my patients, through our team approach to urologic care. I always enjoy hearing stories from happy patients who attribute their health and happiness to their decision to see me for a problem. I like what I do, but the success stories are what keep me going each day!
Throughout my medical career, I have had many different experiences that have shaped the kind of doctor I am today and have to lead me towards specializing in urology medicine. To provide all patients with the same level of care and dignity as when providing treatment for myself or my family members is an important facet of delivering excellent medical care—this is something that has never been compromised in any aspect during my education or professional career.

If there was one thing that you could change about healthcare today what would it be?

Doctors of urology often feel like they can’t go back and try to fix things because it’s expensive and time-consuming. Some changes could help make the process more efficient for doctors, nurses, patients, and payers.

Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?

Dr. Kumar will have completed his fellowship in male reproductive health at the University of Southern California, where he hopes to specialize in male infertility. The skills he will learn from this fellowship will take him from a general doctor of urology to one who offers more specialized care for patients with issues that may be outside the typical scope of medical doctors with this degree who are qualified to practice. His goal is not only to provide superior quality healthcare but also to equip his patients with all the knowledge they need in order to maintain and improve their own wellness and quality of life.

As an entrepreneur how would you define success and failure?

People who are successful are those who are able to do what they love and to enjoy the freedom that comes with their success. It is not uncommon for someone’s definition of success to change as they grow and mature, but at the core, it is something that feeds your spirit and aligns with your passions. For entrepreneurs in particular, I believe success can be defined by a variety of things including meaningful work, financial security, being able to balance work with one’s personal life, or a sense of accomplishment when looking back on one’s business journey over time. Failure is simply about getting knocked down–it only becomes failure if you allow it to consume you or take you out for good.

Who is someone who has influenced your life?

My parents have always been my main influence because they have given me support and resources in order to pursue my goals. My father taught me that with hard work, you can achieve anything you want as long as you put your mind to it. And my mother has always been a backbone for the family while maintaining her femininity and beauty on the exterior. I could never live up to their heights but I will always try my best to strive toward them and put good in this world that they may not be able to experience.
