Power Up Your SMB’s Digital Marketing

by Nathan Zachary

When it comes to online businesses, digital marketing is everything. Therefore, whenever there is an issue or a need for an upgrade, digital marketing is the field you should focus on. Having that in mind, here are some areas one should work on in order to enhance their digital marketing game.

Hit the books

We mean this a bit metaphorically, the idea is to do your research when it comes to the world of digital marketing. Since this is an ever developing field, things are changing at a high pace and there is a lot to learn. We suggest choosing the top dozen businesses in your domain and thoroughly study their marketing strategy. List all the categories you will be grading during the research process. Make groups and charts and make sure to leave room for both positive and negative sides of each graded unit. After all your work is done, you will finalize it with a summary of what you are doing well and what needs changing. Approach this with utter seriousness. Without knowledge, you have no grounds for progress. All your further actions depend on this one step. This is why it is so important you do it right.

Boost your social media

Bumping up your social media is always a good idea. Depending on the level of development of your social network accounts, there are certain actions you can take. If you have only practiced social media on entry level, you could use the chance to fully design your profiles and link them together. Moreover, you should reach out to your target audience and start using built in analytics tools all popular social networks have. However, if you feel like there is nothing left to upgrade, invest in the education of your employees in the field of social media. Take training and courses to learn some advanced social media. It may motivate you to start building your accounts from scratch and applying the knowledge you gained. Some might say it is a waste of time, however, there are huge possibilities that await when one invests such effort.

Rebrand

Another way to boost your digital game is to reinvent your brand. This does not require a lot of money, but it does take time and effort, as well as a creative mind. During this process, there are many things you can do differently. For instance, one can opt for a change of target audience, a change of UI or even a change of business context. Of course, some general advice is not to change too many things at once. If you do decide for a radical change, make sure to do your research beforehand and support it with a solid business plan, goals and estimates. Finally, don’t forget to think of an inspirational story of why you decided to rebrand in the first place, this will ease the transition from the old version to the new.

Hire influencers

Influencers are a great way to do marketing. If you can get a hold of a decently popular influencer, you would be stepping up significantly. You may not believe it, but partnering up with an influencer gives better results than many other known marketing strategies. If you do decide to take a chance and opt for this unconventional way of marketing, there are things to keep in mind. You need to find an appropriate influencer to partner with. Your ultimate goal should be to find someone who would be able to speak to your target audience. This is quite a challenge and it takes time and research. However, one cannot find this information in books, so it would be best if you hired someone who is influencer-savvy.

Step up your game

If you want to make progress, you need to have a goal or standard in mind that you would like to achieve and maintain. Since you are shooting for the big leagues, certain criteria need to be met. This standard will probably be dictated by the research you conducted in the first paragraph. This stage also demands a lot of time and effort as everything needs to be revised and possibly even refactored. Firstly, you need to mind your design. Start from the basics, font size and style need to be the same throughout the whole website. The theme needs to be the same, too. Using white spaces should be consistent and the way you form paragraphs. Moreover, you need to mind your content. Everything you write should be in the same style, grammatically correct, of course. Image quality should be high and the style in which the photos are taken should also be the same on your website and all social media. These are all little things, but together, they make up a whole that leaves an impression.

Mind your video content

There are certain things that are more fit for a video than a text. Moreover, a video is more descriptive and captivating than a long text. However, the important thing to know is not to exaggerate. A video should not last longer than two minutes and it should be aiming closely at the point. Any long text describing an algorithmic process can and should be exchanged with a video or an image. Of course, the text should be kept in the shortest possible form, such as notes, just in case, as we cannot be sure the video is watched. Videos should also be concise as people lose focus easily. Everything is so available, it is just a click away. We are surrounded with auditory and optical sensations which is why it is extremely difficult keeping someone’s attention. Therefore, one must be careful utilizing videos and texts and try to find the optimal combination.

All in all, any respectable SMB needs to have a change in digital marketing strategy from time to time. This area is evolving through time and entrepreneurs need to learn to keep up. Only that way will thy be able to keep their business up and running.
