Tips and how to learn to swim for beginners

Here’s how to learn to swim that can be tried for beginners.

1. Get used to being in the water from a shallow pool

Getting used to being in the water is the first step you need to take when you learn to swim. The method is simple. You can start by standing in a pool that is not too deep, where if you stand, your feet can still touch the bottom of the pool and your head is not in the water. 

After that, start putting your face into the water while still in a standing position. Hold for five seconds while exhaling underwater, then lift your face out of the water again. This will make you feel the sensation of breathing underwater and slowly get used to being in the water.

2. Start learning to float in water

To be able to swim with lifeguard training you must be able to float in the water. Actually, our bodies will automatically be able to float on water, but sometimes fear makes people not dare to really let go of their grip or footprints from the bottom of the pool.

Therefore, when you learn to float, start in a shallow pool so that if there is a reflex to stand up after trying to float for the first time, your feet can still reach the bottom of the pool. 

Learning to float can be started by positioning your body like a starfish with your legs and arms wide apart. Try to stay in this position for a few seconds or even minutes, and feel your body float on the surface of the water.

If you are familiar with this position, then you can start learning how to float properly while swimming, namely:

  • When floating, the position of the head, hips, and feet should form a straight horizontal line (like lying on your stomach or lying down).
  • If you swim with your torso hanging or your legs down, your swimming speed will be hampered. You will also waste more energy when swimming.
  • Try to dip your head deeper into the water to align your body if you keep your feet down.
  • If your torso continues to hang, try to train your abdominal muscles more often to keep your torso straight while you’re in the water.

3. Try to stay relaxed

One of the suggestions that are often given to beginners who are learning to swim is to relax in the water. A relaxed state will prevent panic and save energy used when swimming.

But relaxed conditions when swimming is not just any relaxation. The reason is, you must still be able to control the position of your body while in the water to keep it parallel from head to toe.

4. Pay attention to good breathing technique

How to learn to swim well also needs to pay attention to proper breathing techniques. One thing that beginner swimmers should pay attention to is not to hold their breath while their head is in the water. When your head is in the water, you have to exhale. 

Holding your breath underwater will slow down your movement and make you short of breath. This is what makes in every style of swimming, there is a time when your head rises to the surface because that’s when you can take a breath. 

5. Positioning the hands and arms so that they are in line with the shoulders

While swimming, extend your body with every movement of your arms. Keep your hands and arms in line with your shoulders in each stroke.

When your hands are back in the water, don’t let the underwater movement pass through your midsection.

6. Pay attention to foot movement

Although the main forces that move the body through the water are the hands and arms, don’t underestimate the technique of footwork. The most common mistake beginner swimmers make is moving their legs too much or too much.

Too much leg movement will only give a little boost to the body’s speed in the water. But this activity actually consumes a lot of energy and quickly raises the heart rate. Because the movement of the legs will use the large muscles in the body such as the thigh muscles.

Instead, move the leg lightly and relaxed from the thigh in a pointed toe position ( point ). No need to move your feet too much. You simply make sure the position of the feet is always parallel to the torso.

7. Use tools to learn to swim

Several aids can help you learn to swim more easily. The tool is not a tire, because it will interfere with movement. Tools that can be used to learn to swim include a special float board made of plastic.

You can use the board as a handrail while learning to swim forward. 

Learn to swim and its challenges for beginners

For many adults who cannot swim yet, they usually fall into one of the following categories:

  • Ever with the wrong technique

You may have learned to swim, but failed to master the proper swimming technique. In the end, you’ll never swim because you’re embarrassed to swim with a technique that looks sloppy.

  • Had a bad experience with water

Having a bad experience in water that triggers trauma and fear of drowning can also be reasons someone avoids swimming.

  • Never learned to swim at all

People who have not had the opportunity to learn to swim until they are adults may feel that it is too late to learn now.

Whichever category you fall into, rest assured that everyone can swim and it’s never too late to learn. What is clear, you will never be able to master it if you never or do not.
